Socratic Symposium: Discussion of the Four Virtues
The 4 virtues of Socrates:- Prudence[knowledge]
- Fortitude[Courage/Bravery]
- Temperance[Moderation]
- Justice[Fairness]
I think that knowledge is very important in these four virtues because of knowing what you are doing, and not being ignorant. As Socrates said, " wrongdoing is a consequence of ignorance." Knowledge is also important because you have to know how much you have yet to know in order to be humble.
Fortitude is also another important virtue that Socrates discussed as well. It is important to be brave and take risks in order to succeed. Dillan made a valid point when he said that especially now, fortitude is an important virtue because in order to help people these days, you have to risk getting sued in order to save someone's life. Also, Shellby brought up and important point, and it was discussed by much of the class, and it was that there is a difference between bravery and stupidity, and that that is also in the eye of the beholder.
Temperance was also an important point: that every virtue has to have temperance in it; for example, if you don't express moderation in knowledge, than you are a know it all, and if you don't express moderation in courage, than you will be stupid rather than brave, and if you do not express moderation in fairness, than you are a communist(JUST KIDDING PEOPLE).
Justice was also discussed a lot, and that without fairness, love in relationships could be messed up. Fairness was also an important virtue because governments need to be fair because without it, they would not be successful.
Overall, the discussion was very interesting and eye opening, and it changed my view on these four virtues and the discussion of life in general.
