Malian Women Have Health Risks From Skin Lighteners

I am responding to a post made by Cortney Golub. You can find it here.

Skin bleaching in Mali is a not safe for the women there. The advertisers of the creams and chemicals used for bleaching the skin of Malian women make the people very ebullient about using the chemicals. The chemicals are designed to make the skin of Malian women pallid, and often times these creams burn and cause health damage to the women. The women state that the reason for using these chemicals is to embellish themselves and make themselves salacious to the men. However, the men are sometimes not at all attracted to women who use the chemicals. Poor women are most affected because the cheapest chemicals are often those that are the least salubrious, although all of them cause cancer. The women that have the dowry of having the lightest skin are looked upon highly in society, and darker-skinned women are mesmeric about making their skin lighter. This is not a jovial subject and is not helped by the U.S's, Saudi Arabia's, Morocco's, and Nigeria's contributions to the problem by selling the women these products that lighten their skin.

Socratic Symposium: Discussion of the Four Virtues

The 4 virtues of Socrates:
  • Prudence[knowledge]
  • Fortitude[Courage/Bravery]
  • Temperance[Moderation]
  • Justice[Fairness]
These four virtues prompted much discussion from the class. There were many points to be made. One of the points that was made was by Shellby and was that "these virtues are in the eyes of the beholder." I think that that is a very valuable point because these virtues mean a lot of different things to a lot of people.
I think that knowledge is very important in these four virtues because of knowing what you are doing, and not being ignorant. As Socrates said, " wrongdoing is a consequence of ignorance." Knowledge is also important because you have to know how much you have yet to know in order to be humble.
Fortitude is also another important virtue that Socrates discussed as well. It is important to be brave and take risks in order to succeed. Dillan made a valid point when he said that especially now, fortitude is an important virtue because in order to help people these days, you have to risk getting sued in order to save someone's life. Also, Shellby brought up and important point, and it was discussed by much of the class, and it was that there is a difference between bravery and stupidity, and that that is also in the eye of the beholder.
Temperance was also an important point: that every virtue has to have temperance in it; for example, if you don't express moderation in knowledge, than you are a know it all, and if you don't express moderation in courage, than you will be stupid rather than brave, and if you do not express moderation in fairness, than you are a communist(JUST KIDDING PEOPLE).
Justice was also discussed a lot, and that without fairness, love in relationships could be messed up. Fairness was also an important virtue because governments need to be fair because without it, they would not be successful.
Overall, the discussion was very interesting and eye opening, and it changed my view on these four virtues and the discussion of life in general.

My Perception Of Beauty

Baja
This picture has a sense of beauty because of how perfect and flawless the wave is, and the rarity of the moments when all of the right variables come into play to make a perfect day. This picture is especially beautiful to me because I have surfed that spot (or a spot exactly like it, and still in Baja) in the same but slightly smaller conditions. This photo brings back many memories of one of the most fun surf trips I have ever been on. This photo is a very amazing picture that captures the most coveted moment of surfing: rolling up on the rocky point break shore with perfection just a couple hundred yards away.

Teahupoo
This picture is beautiful to me because, although it pleasing to the eye, but it is a testament to nature’s power. This wave is called Teahupoo [cho-pu] and it is the most dangerous surf break on the planet. This is beautiful to me because of the sheer amount of water that is moving in the picture, and how powerful nature can be. I have no desire to ride these waves; they are only to look at for me. The main thing that strikes me in this picture is how perfect the conditions are on such a deadly wave. It is simply an amazing moment captured on film.
